A new fence transforms your garden's appearance, provides privacy and security, and can even add value to your property. But with several types of fencing available, how do you choose the right one for your Ayrshire home? Here's our professional guide.

    Types of Garden Fencing

    1. Lap Panel Fencing

The most popular and cost-effective option. Horizontal overlapping slats create a solid screen. Panels are typically 6ft × 6ft and slot between concrete or timber posts. Best for: budget-friendly garden boundaries.

    2. Close-Board (Featherboard) Fencing

Individual vertical boards are nailed to horizontal rails, creating a stronger, more durable fence than lap panels. Close-board fencing handles wind better and can follow sloping ground without stepping. Best for: exposed sites, sloping gardens and long-term value.

    3. Picket Fencing

Low, open fencing (typically 3–4ft) that defines boundaries without blocking views. Ideal for front gardens and cottage-style properties. Best for: decorative front boundaries.

    4. Bespoke and Composite Fencing

Custom designs using hardwood, composite materials or mixed-material panels. More expensive but offers unique style and exceptional longevity. Best for: contemporary gardens and feature boundaries.

    Concrete Posts vs Timber Posts

In Ayrshire's wet climate, concrete posts are strongly recommended. Timber posts — even pressure-treated ones — eventually rot at ground level. Concrete posts with gravel boards provide a fence system that can last 20+ years with only the panels needing replacement.

How Much Does Garden Fencing Cost in Ayrshire?

Costs vary by type, length and ground conditions:

    • Lap panel fencing: From £65–£90 per panel run (supply and fit)
    • Close-board fencing: From £85–£120 per bay
    • Picket fencing: From £50–£70 per metre

These are guide prices — the actual cost depends on access, ground conditions, old fence removal and post type. We always provide a free, detailed estimate before starting.

    Planning Permission

In Scotland, you generally don't need planning permission for fences up to 2 metres high (1 metre if next to a road). However, if you live in a conservation area or your property has specific conditions, check with your local council before proceeding.
