What Our Driveway Cleaning Service Includes
Your driveway is the first thing visitors see. In Ayrshire's damp climate, driveways deteriorate quickly — moss, algae, lichen and atmospheric grime build up within a single season, turning once-clean surfaces into slippery, discoloured eyesores. MWM Gardening Services provides specialist driveway cleaning across Irvine, Kilwinning, Troon, Saltcoats, Kilmarnock, Ayr, Prestwick and the wider Ayrshire area.
We clean all driveway types: block paving (herringbone, basket weave, stretcher bond), concrete slabs, poured concrete, tarmac, resin-bound aggregate, natural stone (sandstone, granite, slate) and pattern-imprinted concrete. Each surface receives the correct pressure, nozzle and technique to deliver a thorough clean without damage.
Every driveway clean includes a biodegradable pre-treatment that kills moss, algae and lichen at the root before we wash. This biological treatment continues working for weeks after we leave, preventing rapid regrowth and extending the clean period to 12–18 months.
For block paving driveways, we re-sand all joints with kiln-dried sand after cleaning — restoring structural stability, preventing weed growth and maintaining the paving's intended appearance. This is included as standard, not an optional extra.
Why Neglected Driveways Cost You More Long-Term
A dirty driveway isn't just an eyesore — it's a liability. Moss and algae make surfaces dangerously slippery when wet. If a visitor, delivery driver or postman slips on your property, you could face a personal injury claim. Professional cleaning eliminates this hazard completely.
Biological growth causes structural damage over time. Moss roots penetrate into paving joints, loosening sand and mortar. Water enters the gaps, and Ayrshire's freeze-thaw cycles crack and displace individual blocks. What starts as a cosmetic issue becomes expensive repair work — £1,000+ for block paving re-laying versus £150–£250 for annual cleaning.
Weed growth follows neglect. Once sand is displaced from block paving joints, weeds establish deep root systems that further destabilise the surface. Pulling weeds without re-sanding just creates space for more weeds. Professional cleaning with re-sanding breaks this cycle.
Property value suffers measurably. Estate agents consistently report that kerb appeal — dominated by the driveway — is among the top three factors influencing buyer first impressions. A clean driveway can add perceived value of £3,000–£5,000 to a property. A neglected one actively deters buyers.
Our Driveway Cleaning Process
Surface Assessment
We inspect your driveway, identify the material type, assess soiling levels and note any areas needing special attention — cracks, loose blocks, oil stains or drainage issues.
Pre-Treatment Application
A biodegradable biocide solution is applied across the entire surface. This kills moss, algae and lichen at the root for a deeper, longer-lasting clean.
Professional Pressure Washing
Using commercial-grade equipment with rotary surface cleaners, we systematically clean every square metre. Pressure and technique are matched to your specific surface material.
Joint Re-Sanding
For block paving, kiln-dried sand is swept into all joints after cleaning. This restores stability, prevents weed growth and maintains the paving structure.
Final Rinse & Inspection
The entire driveway receives a final rinse. We inspect every area for consistency, clean up waste water responsibly and leave your property spotless.
Why Professional Driveway Cleaning Beats DIY
Dramatically Improved Kerb Appeal
The transformation is immediate and striking. Years of grime removed in hours — your driveway looks brand new, boosting your property's first impression.
12–18 Month Clean Period
Our bio-treatment kills growth at the root. DIY pressure washing only removes surface growth — it returns within weeks. Professional treatment prevents regrowth for over a year.
Surface-Safe Cleaning
We match pressure, nozzle and technique to your driveway material. No etching, no stripped pointing, no damage. Your surfaces are cleaned professionally, not harmed.
Slip Hazard Elimination
Moss and algae-covered driveways are dangerously slippery. Professional cleaning removes the hazard completely, protecting your family and visitors.
Prevents Expensive Repairs
Annual cleaning costs £150–£250. Replacing damaged block paving costs £1,000+. Regular professional cleaning prevents the biological and structural damage that leads to costly repairs.
Complete Service Including Re-Sanding
We don't just wash and leave. Block paving joints are re-sanded, waste managed responsibly, and the entire area left clean and stable.
Driveway Cleaning: Surface-Specific Methods & Expert Techniques
Block paving is the most common driveway surface in Ayrshire and requires specific expertise to clean properly. We use a rotary surface cleaner — a disc-shaped attachment that spins twin jets beneath a shroud — delivering an even, streak-free clean across the entire surface without the striping that hand-held lances produce.
After washing, kiln-dried sand (not builder's sand) is swept into every joint. Kiln-dried sand is specifically manufactured for paving joints — it's fine, dry and compacts into joints to provide structural stability and resist weed germination. This step is essential and is included in every block paving clean.
Concrete driveways (slabs, poured, pattern-imprinted) tolerate higher pressure and respond well to rotary cleaning. Pattern-imprinted concrete requires careful attention to avoid damaging the surface relief. After cleaning, we can apply a sealant to restore colour and provide UV protection — particularly valuable for PIC driveways that have faded.
Tarmac driveways need a different approach. Excessive pressure or narrow nozzles can damage the bitumen binder, causing the aggregate to loosen. We use wider fan nozzles at moderate pressure, combined with a pre-treatment that does the heavy lifting on biological growth.
Natural stone driveways (sandstone, granite setts, slate) are cleaned at lower pressure (100–150 bar) with wider fan nozzles to prevent surface etching. The pre-treatment is particularly important for stone — it breaks down biological growth without the need for aggressive pressure that could damage the stone's natural texture.
Resin-bound driveways are porous by design, which means they're prone to moss growth within the aggregate. We clean resin surfaces at moderate pressure with a fan nozzle, taking care not to dislodge the resin-bound aggregate. Pre-treatment is critical for these surfaces as it kills moss within the porous structure.
