What Our Decking Cleaning Service Includes

Garden decking in Ayrshire faces a constant battle against the elements. The combination of rainfall, humidity and limited winter sunlight creates perfect conditions for algae, moss and mildew to colonise timber and composite surfaces. Within 12–18 months of installation, most untreated decking in the region develops a green, slippery coating that makes it unsafe to walk on.

MWM Gardening Services provides specialist decking cleaning across Irvine, Kilwinning, Troon, Saltcoats, Kilmarnock, Ayr, Prestwick and the wider Ayrshire area. We clean softwood (pine, spruce), hardwood (oak, ipe) and composite decking using techniques specifically suited to each material.

Our approach prioritises surface safety. Unlike DIY pressure washing at full power — which raises the timber grain, causes splintering and creates a rough, damaged surface — we use controlled low pressure (80–100 bar) with wide fan nozzles and biodegradable pre-treatment. The result is a thorough clean that removes all biological growth without damaging the timber.

After cleaning, we offer decking oil and stain application to protect the restored timber from UV damage, moisture penetration and biological regrowth. This complete clean-and-protect service extends the life of your decking and keeps it looking great throughout the year.

Why Slippery, Green Decking Is a Serious Problem

Slippery decking is one of the most common causes of garden injuries. When wet, algae-covered timber becomes as slippery as ice. Falls from elevated decking can result in serious injuries — broken wrists, hip fractures and head injuries. The risk is highest for elderly residents and young children.

Beyond safety, neglected decking deteriorates structurally. Moisture trapped by biological growth accelerates timber rot. Moss holds water against the wood surface, preventing it from drying between rain events. Over time, this persistent moisture breaks down the timber fibres, causing boards to soften, warp and eventually fail.

Composite decking isn't immune to problems either. While it won't rot like timber, it does develop algae and mould growth that creates the same slip hazard. Composite surfaces can also stain permanently if biological growth is left too long — the pigments from algae and mould penetrate the composite material.

Replacing decking is expensive. A standard 15sqm timber deck costs £1,500–£3,000 to replace. Composite decking costs even more. Annual cleaning at £60–£105 extends the life of your decking by years, making it one of the best-value maintenance investments you can make.

    Our Decking Cleaning Process

    1

    Condition Assessment

We inspect the decking structure, checking for loose boards, protruding screws, rot and structural integrity. Any safety issues are flagged before we begin.

    2

    Pre-Treatment Application

A biodegradable algae and mould treatment is applied across the entire surface. This kills biological growth at the root for a deeper, longer-lasting clean.

    3

    Low-Pressure Cleaning

Using controlled pressure (80–100 bar) with wide fan nozzles, we clean each board following the grain direction. This removes growth and grey weathering without raising the grain.

    4

    Detail & Edge Cleaning

Handrails, balustrades, steps, edges and between-board gaps receive focused attention. Every visible surface is cleaned uniformly.

    5

    Optional Oil/Stain Treatment

After 48 hours drying time, we can return to apply a protective decking oil or stain. This restores colour, provides UV protection and creates a moisture barrier.

Why Professional Decking Cleaning Makes a Difference

    Safe, Non-Damaging Clean

Low-pressure techniques remove growth without raising the grain, splintering or damaging the timber surface. Your decking is cleaned, not harmed.

    Slip Hazard Eliminated

All algae, moss and biological growth removed. Your decking becomes safe to walk on in all weather conditions.

    Original Colour Restored

Grey weathering and green growth removed, revealing the original timber colour underneath. The transformation is dramatic.

    Extended Decking Lifespan

Regular cleaning prevents the moisture damage and rot that leads to premature failure. Annual cleaning adds years to your decking's life.

    Oil & Stain Protection

Optional protective treatments seal the cleaned timber against UV damage, moisture and biological regrowth.

    Complete Structural Check

We check for loose boards, protruding fixings and signs of rot during every clean. Early detection prevents expensive repairs.

Decking Cleaning: Timber vs Composite & Expert Techniques

Softwood decking (pine, spruce) is the most common type in Ayrshire. It's affordable but requires the most careful cleaning approach. Softwood fibres are easily raised by excessive pressure, creating a rough, splintered surface that's uncomfortable underfoot and prone to further damage. We keep pressure below 100 bar and maintain a consistent nozzle distance of 300–400mm.

Hardwood decking (oak, ipe, iroko) is denser and more resistant to pressure damage, but still requires controlled cleaning. The main challenge with hardwood is grey weathering — the silver-grey patina that develops from UV exposure. Our cleaning process removes this grey layer, revealing the rich original colour beneath. A UV-protective oil locks in this restored colour.

Composite decking varies significantly between manufacturers. Some composites have a textured surface that traps dirt and algae within the grain pattern. We use appropriate pressure with specialist composite-safe cleaning solutions. Importantly, we never use wire brushes or abrasive tools on composite surfaces — these void warranties and damage the surface permanently.

The pre-treatment we use for decking is formulated specifically for timber applications. It kills algae, mould and mildew without staining or discolouring the wood. It's biodegradable, safe near plants and continues working after we leave — preventing regrowth for several months.

Between-board gaps are a common area of concern. Debris, leaves and biological growth accumulate in the gaps between decking boards, retaining moisture against the timber and creating conditions for rot. We clean out these gaps as part of every decking clean — it's one of the most important steps for extending decking life.

We strongly recommend decking oil application after cleaning. Cleaned timber is in its most absorbent state and will take up oil effectively, providing deep penetration and long-lasting protection. We use high-quality decking oils that provide UV resistance, water repellency and a natural finish that enhances the timber's appearance.
